Why Ed Sheeran Decided Not to Give Rihanna ‘Shape of You’

“Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran could have been a Rihanna song. Sheeran told her that he didn’t give her the song because it mentions an old rock star and he didn’t have much faith in the song. According to Billboard, Sheeran talked about “Shape of You” during a 2017 BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show. “I went in to write songs for other people with a guy named Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid, and as we were writing this song, I thought, ‘This would really work for Rihanna,’ And then I started singing lyrics like ‘putting Van the Man on the jukebox’ and I was like ‘Well, she’s not really going to sing that, is she?’”  For context, “Van the Man” is another name for Van Morrison, an Irish rock star. He is most known for his hit “Brown-Eyed Girl.” Halfway through the recording process, Sheeran decided to keep the song even though he thought it would perform poorly. Boy was he wrong! What song did you hate at first but became a huge hit?
