Taylor Swift's master recordings of her first six studio albums were acquired by talent manager Scooter Braun in a controversial deal in 2019. Swift, who had tried to buy her masters outright, was devastated by the sale. In response, Kelly Clarkson suggested re-recording the songs she didn't own to devalue the originals. Swift began re-recording her albums in 2020, with all four re-releases debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200. In May 2025, Swift bought back her masters from Shamrock Capital, giving her ownership of her entire catalog.
