More than a decade after The Social Network chronicled the rise of Facebook, a sequel is officially on the way. Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the original screenplay, will return—this time also directing the film.
According to The Guardian, the sequel will focus on Facebook’s more recent controversies, including its role in spreading misinformation, the impact of its algorithms on political division, and internal research about harm to teen mental health. The story is inspired in part by The Facebook Files, a 2021 investigative series by The Wall Street Journal based on leaked internal documents.
Unlike the first film, which focused on legal drama and the company’s origin story, Part II will explore the ethical consequences of the social media giant’s evolution—and the global influence it now holds. Casting has yet to be announced, and it’s unclear whether original star Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his role as Mark Zuckerberg.
The project is in early development with no release date yet, but Sorkin has said the story is one that needs to be told.
