Big Lots Gets a Lifeline, Hundreds of Stores to Remain Open

What about stores in the Capital Region?

Big Lots, the discount retailer that filed for bankruptcy in September, has made a deal to keep many of its stores and warehouses open.

The company announced on Friday it will be sold to Gordon Brothers, a firm that helps struggling businesses. Gordon Brothers will transfer Big Lots’ stores and warehouses to other retailers.

Variety Wholesalers Inc., which owns over 400 discount stores in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, plans to buy up to 400 Big Lots stores and two warehouses. Big Lots CEO Bruce Thorn says these locations will keep using the Big Lots name:

This deal is the best way to save jobs and keep the Big Lots brand alive.

Big Lots, based in Columbus, Ohio, blamed rising costs and lower spending on home goods for its financial troubles.

The fate of specific stores isn't known yet. Currently liquidation sales are underway at remaining stores in the Capital Region, which include Amsterdam, Clifton Park, Colonie and Greenwich.
