Favorite Memory of Listening to Dolly. How positive she always was and her strong faith, She loved everyone and stayed out of politics

Tammy Watson

Dolly Parton has always represented something much bigger to me than celebrity. She is proof that you can come from humble beginnings, dream beyond what anyone expects of you, become enormously successful, and still never forget where you came from—or the people who may need someone to believe in them.

What I admire most about Dolly is that she turned her success into opportunity for other people. Her generosity, especially her commitment to children, literacy, education, and her community, says so much about who she is. She has never seemed to believe that success is only about how far you go; it is also about how many people you help along the way.

And I love that she has done all of it while remaining unmistakably herself—her faith, humor, intelligence, femininity, Southern roots, big hair, rhinestones and all. She never needed to become someone else in order to be taken seriously.

My favorite Dolly quote has always captured that spirit for me:

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”

That one stays with me because there is so much wisdom in it.

Favorite song: Coat of Many Colors. It isn't simply a song about being poor. To me, it is about a mother creating value from what she had, a child understanding that value, and discovering that worth isn't determined by what other people see when they look at you.

Favorite movie: 9 to 5—funny, smart, and far ahead of its time.

But what Dolly means to me most is this: Where you begin does not determine where you can go, and when you get there, don't forget to reach back for somebody else.

That is a legacy worth celebrating
