Research suggests GLP-1 drugs may decrease motivation to drink

Dallas wine bar Trova Wine and Market is closing its doors due to financial challenges, with owner Michelle Bonds attributing part of the decline to the increasing use of weight-loss drug Ozempic. The drug, originally designed for Type 2 diabetes, is being used by non-diabetics for weight loss and has been linked to decreased alcohol consumption. Research suggests that GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic may reduce the release of dopamine associated with alcohol consumption, leading to decreased motivation to drink. The rise in Ozempic prescriptions across various US states may have implications for the drinks trade as more people turn to the drug for weight loss.
