Police are looking for the vessel involved as restoration efforts face a new setback.

The historic Hudson-Athens Lighthouse was damaged after an unknown vessel struck it sometime between Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday morning. According to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, the incident caused significant damage to the dock and stairs and is being treated as a hit-and-run.

Built in 1874, the lighthouse once guided ships along a dangerous stretch of the Hudson River. Today, it's a cherished landmark and the focus of ongoing preservation efforts by the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society. The damage comes at a time when local volunteers have been working to restore and protect the structure for future generations.

The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office joined the investigation, using sonar to check if the vessel may have sunk after the collision. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.
